9 Unique Ways to Grow Your Interior Design Business

Hey, fellow interior designer! So you started your design biz — yay! I can’t wait to be business besties.

(If you haven’t started yet, no worries! Begin by reading our post on how to start your interior design business right over here and then come back to learn how to scale!)

So now that you’re up and running, we want to share 9 unique ways you can grow your business — that you maybe haven’t even considered.

Let’s begin!

NUMBER ONE: HYPER-TARGET POTENTIAL CLIENTS WITH FACEBOOK ADVERTISING

Facebook ads can be incredibly powerful when it comes to attracting people to your business. By targeting specific demographics, locations, interests, and more, you can bring your dream clients right to you by running ads. Here are some things to consider when running Facebook Ads:

  • Bring in an expert Facebook Ads Manager — they will know how to best target your ideal clients and get the highest return on investment.

  • Consider retargeting ads — these are ads that get shown to people who have interacted with your business online already.

  • Your ad post design and copy will often differ from regular posts. Create graphics especially for campaigns rather than running Facebook Ads with your normal content.

NUMBER TWO: DRIVE REFERRALS WITH WORD-OF-MOUTH MARKETING

A great way to get referrals in your design biz is through word-of-mouth from past clients or other connections. In order to get these word-of-mouth referrals, you must have top-notch onboarding and design processes so people want to share you with their friends. NUMBER THREE: GET DISCOVERED BY POTENTIAL CLIENTS ON HOUZZ

If you’ve never used Houzz, it’s a powerful website where you can browse design ideas, inspiration, and professionals. (That’s you, the professional!) List your services on Houzz to be shown to a large pool of potential clients.

NUMBER FOUR: LET GOOGLE HELP BY SUPERCHARGING YOUR SEO

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is often an underused method of driving traffic to your website. Essentially, it boils down to finding and using keywords and keyword phrases that your audience will be searching. Keep these things in mind as you do your SEO research:

  • Tools like Ubersuggest and Pinterest Trends are great places to source keywords.

  • Look for words and phrases that have high search volume but not a ton of results (so you have less competition in that search).

  • Use your keywords and phrases in everything from photo file names on your website to blog post titles.

NUMBER FIVE: SPEND A LITTLE TO GET A LOT WITH GOOGLE ADWORDS

Similarly to Facebook Ads, running ads on Google will allow you to bring new traffic to your business. Because they are not as widely used as Facebook ads, they can bring more results with less of an investment. Keep in mind that you will need to target your keywords very effectively using this strategy. As mentioned above, working with an ads expert is always a good idea.

NUMBER SIX: BUILD YOUR BRAND WITH BLOGGING

Did you know that businesses with blogs have an average of 55% more website traffic than businesses without a blog? Additionally, blog content on your site can increase your conversion rate by 600%. (Fit Small Business, 2022.)

Use blog posts to share more about your projects and expertise. Include the SEO keywords and phrases from above, and share about your posts on social media (but more on that later!).

NUMBER SEVEN: CREATE YOUR OWN TRIBE BY BUILDING AN EMAIL LIST

Invite people to take the next step with you in your email community. You’ve probably heard how important an email list is in that it’s a platform you have more ownership of, unlike social media accounts. It’s also typically the largest revenue driver your brand will have. Here are a few tips for starting and running your email list:

  • Create a valuable freebie to get people to sign up. Want an example? Here’s ours!

  • Share links to your site and offers in your newsletters. The people on your list will be the most likely to click over to those and take action.

  • Share content via email weekly if you can, but at minimum, send out a monthly newsletter.

NUMBER EIGHT: GET ADDED SUPPORT BY JOINING ASSOCIATIONS

Network in professional associations, or even Facebook groups, to learn from your peers, get support in your business, and even find clients through engagement and referrals! Draft up a post that you can share in these groups that introduces you to everyone and allows them to get to know your business a bit more. Keep the post handy and drop it into groups when you can!

NUMBER NINE: UNLOCK THE POWER OF INSTAGRAM

Finally, get your business on Instagram. Other platforms like TikTok and Pinterest are great as well, but Instagram is a powerful platform. Almost all audiences can be found there — and use the app frequently. Here are a few ways to best use Instagram for your interior design business:

  • Create a solid profile, with an inviting bio, informational and entertaining highlight bubbles, and consistent content published on your feed.

  • If you have the time, go on stories to allow your audience to get to know you more.

  • Use Instagram to drive traffic to your email list, website, and blog posts. This is how people will get to know you even more and eventually book your services or buy your other offers.
